Affiliated Clubs

The Clubs affiliated to the NZSS are described below welcome membership enquires and visitors to their meetings.

Where a private address is given, this is for the current secretary of the club, and is liable to change. Check their websites, or alternatively current addresses are available from the NZSS Secretary.

Auckland Speleo Group

Auckland Speleo Group

The group comprises about 70 members, with meetings held each month (see the ASG website for details). The club owns a hut at Waitomo. Main caving areas are Waipu, Waitomo, and Matawhero.

Hamilton Tomo Group logo

Hamilton Tomo Group

HTG is a long-established club with a membership of about 60. Meetings are held at the Glenview Library on the first Thursday of the month. The club has a large hut at Waitomo, and most activity is based there.

Manawatu Speleological Group logo

Manawatu Speleological Group

This club has about 25 members spread through the northern Wairarapa and Manawatu area. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at a private residence. Main caving areas are Wairarapa, Whakapunake, Mahoenui, and Waitomo.

Wellington Caving Group

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm, from February to November, at Mitsubishi Motors, Ground floor, North facing entrance (revolving door), Te Wananga o Aotearoa building, Todd Park, Porirua. The meeting room is signposted from front entrance door. There is ample free parking available in front of building.

The group has a current membership of about 25. The group visits caving areas throughout the southern North Island as well as Makuri, Waitomo, Piopio, and Mahoenui, and also has trips to Nelson caving areas.

Nelson Speleological Group

Nelson Speleological Group has a membership of 40 active cavers, with prime caving areas close at hand. Meetings are on the third Thursday of the month at a member's house. The club has a caving base on Takaka Hill.

Buller Caving Group

  • P.O. Box 363, Westport.

Based in Westport, BCG has about a dozen members who have for many years explored the Westland bush for caves, especially around Charleston and north of Karamea, where they have joint ownership of a small hut. Meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month.

Formed in 1968, Canterbury Caving Group has 40 members, whose activities are focussed on the Punakaiki-Charleston area of the West Coast, as well as the marble areas of Nelson. For further information regarding the CCG including contact details and meetings please visit the CCG website.
