The NZSS Produces a number of Publications: The Tomo TimesThe Tomo Times is published and distributed to financial members about every three months. It covers news of caving discoveries, social events, club news, NZSS Council business, advertising, caving trips, etc. The Editor will gratefully receive articles that Society members send in. The NZSS BulletinThe New Zealand Speleological Bulletin is a long-term record of cave exploration in New Zealand, and also publishes articles on cave science topics and other items of caving interest. Articles about New Zealand caving, caves and cavers are welcome. NZSS HandbookThe NZSS Handbook contains important information for NZSS members.
The handbook gives a brief history of the society, and a description of caving in New Zealand.
There are sections on cave leadership, search and rescue, conservation and ethics, and administration and constitution of the society. A “must read” for all members!
CaveSAR CIMS guideThis document aims to encourage the maximization of knowledge of incident management prior to deployment and use of common terminology and functions within CaveSAR to assist regional and national integration.
It has been produced by NZSS for use by its members in response to CaveSAR operations.
It is intended to be a starting point for local areas to use and adapt depending on their needs for local CaveSAR and provide understanding and guidance.
The New Zealand Cave AtlasThis is a compilation of all New Zealand cave maps published by the Society, reproduced in A4 format. The first edition, produced in 1980, covered the whole country in one volume. In 1988 The North Island Cave Atlas (N.Z. Cave Atlas - Volume 1) of just North Island caves was published (currently being updated). The South Island Cave Atlas (N.Z. Cave Atlas - Volume 2) was published in 1990 and revised in 1993 and 2004. ISBN 1877270393 Cave MapsCopies of all NZSS cave maps are available from the North Island or South Island NZSS Maps Officers. A charge is made to cover costs. Members are encouraged to survey their cave discoveries and to send the tracings to the NZSS Maps Officers for printing. Draughting film is available from the Maps Officers at no charge to members. For information on cave mapping standards and techniques, see the South Island volume of the New Zealand Cave Atlas, or contact the Maps Officers. All affiliated clubs are supplied with an up-to-date set of maps of caves within their Police District for Search and Rescue purposes. The Waitomo Caves Museum houses the Society's archival set of maps.
