Weekend Program


Nelson Speleological Group welcomes you to join us at the top of the South Island and the heart of New Zealand caving for the New Zealand Speleological Society’s Annual General Meeting.

This meeting serves not only to fulfill the formal requirements of our society but is also a great opportunity to meet up with other cavers from around New Zealand and explore some of the great caves in the Nelson region. At the gateway to the great outdoors there is bound to be something for everyone. Based at the NSG Club Hut on the Takaka Hill this is a weekend not to be missed.

Venue

The weekend activities will be based around NSG’s club hut on the Takaka Hill and the surrounding area.

Weekend Agenda for Registered Members

Friday 23rd establish your campsite, settle in, general socialising time.
7pm-11:59pm Supper (for registered members), chili con carne or vegetarian option
Saturday 24th
10.00-16:30 NZSS Council Meeting will be held at the Upper Takaka Country Club.
Observers are welcome to attend.
All day Numerous activities above and below ground for those not attending the NZSS Council Meeting
5pm NZSS AGM at Upper Takaka Country Club
6.30pm Pre-dinner drinks at Upper Takaka Country Club
7.30pm Dinner, merriment and socialising at Upper Takaka Country Club
Sunday 25th
All day Lots of caving and activities
6pm BBQ at the hut includes vegetarian patties (for registered members) and Arch Narna tales and the grand Arch Narna Award
Monday 26th
8am Full English Breakfast or vegetarian option (for registered members)
Full or half day For the keen enthusiasts, more caving
Evening Time to say our farewells to many.

Activities

  • Caving trips to suit ALL skill levels, family to extreme.
  • Orienteering Course/Karst appreciation
  • Recommended activities but not organized trips include:

Accommodation

All Registered Members are welcome to stay at or around the NSG hut.
There are numerous tent sites and the hut will be available for cooking.
A list of camping grounds, hotels, motels, in the area is available from Dawn upon request.

Transport

If you have not yet made travel arrangements, check with your local caving group as they may be pooling transport. If you need a pick up from Nelson Airport, or you have a spare seat in a vehicle NSG will assist in coordinating people – Let Leo know your requirements.

NZSS AGM and dinner

This is to be held at the Upper Takaka Country Club; about 10 minutes drive from the , NSG Hut, at the bottom of the Takaka Hill.
The AGM begins at 5pm, followed by the Photographic, Literary and Survey Competitions Awards.
Dinner will be served at 7.30pm with musical entertainment to follow.
Drinks are available at the Country Club at a reasonable price, please no BYO.
The cost of the dinner is incorporated into your Registration Fee.
Registration is absolutely essential.
Unregistered diners will be charged a late registration fee.
Transport between NSG hut and the Country Club will be coordinated to enable you to drink and not drive.

Competitions

The results of the Photographic, Literary and Survey Competitions will be announced at the end of the AGM.
Photographic entries to be submitted to Andrew Smith
Literary entries to Dawn Wood.
Survey entries to Jonathan Ravens
For deadline of when entries should be in, refer to specific Competition Rules of Entry.

BBQ Sunday

On Sunday evening a BBQ will be put on at the , NSG Hut for those Registered.
BYO liquid refreshments. The BBQ starts at 6pm, the Arch Narna Award will be part of the evenings entertainment.
The Arch Narna Award is a competition for the silliest/weirdest/funniest cave incident of the year. Get ready to entertain us with your entry!

Trip List

The trip list is attached – changes may be made to this trip list, depending on the number of people interested. If you wish to do a particular cave not listed or if you want more details about any of the trips please contact Kevin. He can advise on the level of difficulty, likely length and fitness requirements, etc.
These trips will be filled on a first in basis, to ensure equipment and leaders are organised.
All trips will be coordinated on the weekend from a white board at the NSG Hut.
Carbide will be available for sale at the hut for use during the weekend.

Registration is essential for ALL
Please send your Registration form and payment in before the 16th October.
Payments after this date will attract a late payment fee of $10 each.
Registration Fee includes a full weekend package.

Payment is required at the time of registering.

It is vitally important that you ALL send your Registration forms back to Dawn, regardless of how you’re paying, for trips and catering purposes etc.

First field: AGM Second field: YOUR NAME Third field: NUMBER ATTENDING. This is very important to keep track of your payment.
